What are IRISS infrared inspection windows, and why not just use a standard sight glass?
A standard sight glass is usually plain polycarbonate or acrylic — fine for a visual check, useless for thermal. Infrared windows use materials that pass long-wave infrared radiation, so a thermographer can shoot an accurate temperature reading through the window without opening the panel. IRISS windows go further: the same window supports infrared, visual, ultrasound, and partial discharge inspection, so one opening covers every diagnostic method your program uses.
How is this different from the crystal-based IR windows most manufacturers sell?
Most infrared windows on the market use a crystal optic — usually germanium or a similar material. Crystal is brittle, hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture over time, which degrades transmission), and limited to small round openings, typically no larger than 4 inches. IRISS uses a patented, reinforced polymer optic instead. It doesn’t crack under mechanical stress, doesn’t degrade from moisture or chemical exposure, and isn’t limited to a small round format — which is why IRISS can build windows in custom sizes and shapes.
What does "Fixed and Stable Transmission" (FAST) actually mean for my readings?
It means the window’s infrared transmission rate doesn’t drift over the life of the asset. Crystal windows lose clarity as they absorb moisture or develop microfractures, which means your thermal readings get less accurate over time even if nothing’s wrong with the equipment. FAST material holds its transmission rate, so a reading taken five years from now is as reliable as one taken on day one.
Can these windows handle harsh environments — outdoor substations, washdown areas, chemical exposure?
Yes. The polymer optic resists moisture absorption, chemical exposure, and mechanical stress, and the CAP-ENV series adds an environmental seal with an optional dust cover for extreme conditions. These are built for continuous outdoor and industrial exposure, not just clean indoor switchgear rooms.
Are they rated for arc flash environments?
Yes. IRISS windows are arc flash rated and arc containment tested to IEC 62271-200, and the product line is built to support NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 compliance. The entire point of an infrared window is to let your team inspect energized equipment without opening the enclosure — the arc flash rating is what makes that a real risk reduction, not just a convenience.
What inspection methods can I run through one window?
