What is motion amplification?
Motion amplification uses digital video and image processing to measure tiny movements across a recorded image and visually exaggerate them, so motion that’s invisible to the naked eye becomes something you can see, measure, and analyze. It works by measuring motion pixel by pixel and scaling it up, while also enabling frequency-based filtering to isolate the movement that matters.
Does this replace our vibration analysis program?
No. Motion amplification is most powerful as part of a broader reliability toolkit alongside vibration analyzers, ultrasound, thermography, process data, and maintenance history. A conventional vibration reading can tell you that amplitude is high at a certain frequency. Motion amplification bridges the gap by showing you the actual motion pattern behind that number.
What equipment can you inspect?
Essentially anything the camera can see: motors, pumps, fans, compressors, piping systems, structural supports, conveyors, belt drives, rotating equipment, and guards or accessories.
Do you need to shut our equipment down?
No. Motion amplification is non-contact and is typically performed while equipment is running under normal operating conditions, which is part of what makes it useful for catching issues that only show up under load.
How is this different from thermography or ultrasound inspection?
Thermography and ultrasound detect heat and sound signatures. Motion amplification detects and visualizes physical movement, whether that’s structural resonance, looseness, instability, excessive pipe movement, or a soft machine base. It answers a different question: not just that something is wrong, but which component is actually driving the problem and where the movement is really coming from.
