Ultrasound has become one of the most powerful tools in modern condition-based maintenance. It detects electrical faults, mechanical failures, lubrication issues, and energy waste long before they escalate, yet many programs still underuse it. This course is designed to advance ultrasound theory and practice into the next generation, surpassing the ISO 18436-Part 8 CAT 1 ASU outline.
Participants learn the principles of ultrasound, how to operate their instruments effectively, and how to use sound analysis software to uncover fault conditions.
Students will be immersed in a learner-centered, instructor-guided environment that blends lectures with practical, scenario-based assignments. Through structured training modules, participants will learn the science of ultrasound, its many applications across CBM-driven reliability, and how to increase mean time between failure while lowering total asset cost at their facility.
Note:
• Students should have 210 hours of documented operational use of ultrasound detection devices (recommended, not required).
• Students will need access to an ultrasound instrument and sound analysis software to complete assignments.

By completing this Level 1 Ultrasound Training, participants will:
• Gain a deep understanding of ultrasound theory and its real-world CBM applications.
• Learn proper data acquisition techniques and fundamental methods for analyzing harmonic indications.
• Understand how to establish ultrasound action levels for informed corrective maintenance decisions.
• Learn the core principles of condition monitoring and how to manage or strengthen an ultrasound program.
• Gain confidence using ultrasound instruments and sound analysis software to identify faults early.
Certification
This course is designed to support and exceed:
• ISO 18436 Part 8 – Ultrasound Certification
• ASNT SNT-TC-1A recommended practices
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the IRISS 18436-Part 8 CAT 1 ASU Certification, recognized across maintenance and reliability programs worldwide.

Ultrasound training teaches technicians how to use airborne and structure-borne sound to detect problems like compressed air leaks, electrical arcing, and early mechanical faults. It is important because many of these defects are invisible to the eye and thermography alone, yet they cause energy loss, reliability issues, and safety risks if left undetected.
There are no strict prerequisites, but having a background in maintenance or engineering is beneficial for better understanding the course material.
Ultrasound training gives you a practical, in-demand skill that employers value because it directly supports safety, reliability, and energy reduction goals. It also complements thermography and vibration analysis, making you more versatile and more valuable as a multi-skilled reliability professional.
The course surpasses ISO 18436-Part 8 CAT 1 ASU, ensuring that participants gain industry-recognized expertise.
